Amazon Cloud Player review: functional, not mind blowing, and still US-only

Amazon Android Cloud Player appIt’s hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society — which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions – is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon’s two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it’s the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android.

Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It’s not particularly feature rich, and there’s no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive — it does work outside the US, however.

Its primary purpose, as far as we’re concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it’s $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space.

The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it’s very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let’s dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look.

Pink Samsung Galaxy Note headed to the UK in June

Android Central

When the "berry pink" Galaxy Note first launched in Korea in early April, we doubted whether Samsung would look to release the device outside of its home territory. What fools we were.

Today the Carphone Warehouse reveals that it's planning to launch the pink Galaxy Note in the UK starting next month. There's even a pre-registration page open for would-be buyers to sign up for additional info on the mauve monstrosity.  We're not sure what more information can be offered, though — as far as we're concerned it's the same old Galaxy Note, only with a hideous new coat of paint.

In any case, if the existing black and white Galaxy Notes are just too subdued and tasteful for you, you can find out more about the pink variant over at the source link. (Spoiler alert: it's a Galaxy Note, in pink.)

Instapaper 3.0 released for iPhone and iPad, with faster downloads and social networking

Instapaper, the popular read-it-later app for iPhone and iPad, has just updated to version 3.0. It still lets you save links anywhere to read later on your iDevice, but now it’s a lot faster, and it’s also got a very compelling new social element.

Instapaper now has native sharing to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinboard and Evernote. You can even add articles to the sharing queue when you’re offline, and everything will be shared when you reconnect. Tumblr users can even share articles as drafts, to be quoted or annotated for a later post.

Stars in Instapaper have become “likes,” and you can view your friends’ likes, as well. The combo of friends and saved articles makes Instapaper akin to its own Google Reader-like social network. You can add friends from your Twitter or Facebook accounts, or the email contacts on your iOS device.

RSS folders are being phased out, because they were slow to load and few users actually used or liked the feature. Getting rid of them makes room for the app to store a bigger archive of saved articles. You’ll also be able to search your downloaded articles — but not your entire Instapaper web archive.

All in all, 3.0 is an enormous improvement to an already-useful app. It’s available now in the App Store for $4.99, and it’s a free upgrade for anyone who’s purchased Instapaper in the past.

Thousands of iPad Apps Is that All it Has to Offer?

The mad rush to get hold of an iPad certainly led a lot of people to believe that this nifty little gadget would put a smart phone to shame. The fact that users would be able to get thousands of apps on their iPad might have had something to do with craze and Apple did make it one of the selling points about the device. Color location-based photo sharing app makes a big splash on iPhone and Android

Just when Instagram had reached the peak of trendiness, along comes the next big thing in mobile photo-sharing: Color. Color is an iPhone/Android app that lets you share location-tagged photos. What’s new about Color is the way it builds your contacts: it shows you photos from people who are currently within 100 feet of you, whether you know them or not.

If you’re around someone all the time, Color will figure out that you know that person, and start showing you more of their photos. Meanwhile, photos from the strangers who move in and out of your life will disappear as quickly as the people themselves. This “elastic” social network is supposed to encourage people to say hi to one another, while keeping the photos relevant by showing your current location.

It’s an interesting play with a ton of money behind it — the color.com domain name alone cost the startup $350,000. It’s also got a big name attached: Bill Nguyen, who also founded Lala.com and sold it to Apple. Whether users are comfortable with this new, very public way of sharing photos will determine whether Color’s future is bright. If it doesn’t work on its own, we’re sure the technology would be an attractive buy for a company like Facebook which thrives on creatively pushing the bounds of privacy.

New iPad Battery Life

The new iPad has the same battery life as the iPad 2. This may strike some as peculiar because the iPad 3 has a new more highly-powered battery. However, although the battery does carry more juice, this is offset by the new features of the iPad 3 which require more power, for example the high-definition Retina display and the 4G connectivity. That said, the new iPad battery life is still perfectly reasonable and is suitable both for casual at-home use [...]

Libra for Android helps you track your weight using The Hacker’s Diet system

libra

I’m getting fat; that’s what you see on the screenshot to the right — my gradual move from chubby to portly. But never mind the numbers, look at the pretty graph!

If you’ve ever read The Hacker’s Diet, this graph should be instantly recognizable. Each point shows the weight for a given day, while the trend line lets you see if you’re gaining or losing weight.

When I use my “main” PC, I have a homebrew solution for creating and maintaining this graph. But I’ve had to find a temporary solution for Android, and Libra is it.

It’s a beautifully simple app, very true to the spirit of The Hacker’s Diet. You can create a shortcut on your homescreen that brings you right into the data entry screen, so you just tap the shortcut every morning, feed in your weight for the day and hit OK, and then you get to see your progress (or lack thereof) on the graph.

The app remembers the previous day’s weigh-in, which makes it easy to enter today’s weight (as they’re usually not too different). The graph is zoomable and scrollable, and most importantly, you can export the data to CSV so you’re not locked into the app.

If you ever need to track your weight using an Android device for any period of time, Libra is one excellent solution.

Twitter suspends UberTwitter and Twidroyd for policy violations

ubermedia apps ubertwitter and twidroyd suspended by twitterUsers of popular Twitter clients UberTwitter and Twidroyd found that they couldn’t log into Twitter today, and a post in the Twitter help center explains why: UberTwitter and Twidroyd have been suspended for violating Twitter’s policies. TechCrunch followed up with Twitter on the suspensions and discovered that the suspended apps were violating Twitter’s privacy, trademark and monetization rules.

Twitter spokesperson Carolyn Penner told TechCrunch, “Violations include, but aren’t limited to, a privacy issue with private Direct Messages longer than 140 characters, trademark infringement, and changing the content of users’ Tweets in order to make money.”

Both UberTwitter and Twidroyd were recently purchased by UberMedia, a company that has been buying up Twitter clients (Echofon and TweetDeck are other recent purchases) and adding them to its Twitter ad network. The trademark issues probably arose because of the “Twitter” in UberTwitter’s name, but whatever UberMedia did to provoke Twitter’s ire is more likely an issue with paid tweets or tweeting ads on behalf of users. Twitter has made in-stream ad networks a strict no-no under its API terms. It will be interesting to see what specific violation it found in UberMedia’s case, but so far it hasn’t been revealed.

UPDATE: UberMedia chief Bill Gross has tweeted that his company will make Twitter’s requested changes to UberTwitter and twidroyd, and they expect to have the apps “back up and running ASAP.”

Evernote Chrome extension gets quick clipping and snippets

evernote chrome extension

Evernote’s Chrome extension might not be quite as powerful a tool as Evernote’s Mac and PC apps, but it does make a great addition to any note-capturing addict’s browser toolbox. The latest update adds common Evernote actions to Chrome’s right-click menu, making grabbing a clipping or starting a new note even more convenient. “Clip this page,” “clip selection” and “clip image” are now just a right-click away.

Evernote for Chrome has also gained the familiar “snippet view” from Evernote’s desktop and mobile apps. To browse the compact snippet versions of all your notes, click the Evernote icon in the toolbar. For extra note-browsing efficiency, there’s even a tab that shows your saved notes from the site you’re currently viewing.

Smaller tweaks include speed improvements and background clipping. Yep, clipping now happens in the background, so you don’t have to wait til your clip is saved before you leave a page.

Serious Evernote junkies will probably still want to feed their addiction with a desktop app, but the Chrome extension is great for work computers and other situations where it’s not practical to install desktop software. It’s also just plain convenient, especially now that you can save a clip with one click!

iPad 2 brings release of iOS 4.3, with FaceTime and Photo Booth

itunes 4.3The iPad 2 launches on March 11th, with a new dual-core A5 processor and HDMI Out capability, but what about the software? Apple announced that the iPad currently has 65,000 apps (compared to 100 for Android Honeycomb tablets), and that the iPad 2 will run the new iOS 4.3.

iOS 4.3 features performance improvements in Safari, thanks to the addition of the Nitro JavaScript engine. It also brings iTunes home sharing, which lets the iPad 2 play content over Wi-Fi from your other networked devices. Oh, and 4.3 also (finally!) lets you decide whether the switch on your iPad is a mute button or an orientation lock.

iPad 2 owners also get Photo Booth, which takes advantage of the new iPad’s built-in camera. It lets you preview 9 photo effects at once, and manipulate the effects by touching the photos. The addition of cameras also means FaceTime has finally arrived on the iPad, and you can use it to call other iPads, iPhones or Macs. Also note the flip option, which lets you switch to the iPad’s rear camera during a FaceTime call.

iPhone 4 owners aren’t left out, either: iOS 4.3 also introduces Personal Hotspot for iPhone 4 only. Personal Hotspot allows you to share your 3G connection with your computer, via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Shot Shot Pirate is a fun, simple physics game

shotshotpirate

Shot Shot Pirate is very satisfying, because each level is short and to the point. You know what you have to do and you just do it.

As you may have gathered from the name, you’re cast in the role of a pirate. Your goal is to shoot at a diamond and make it fall off a tower of bricks. The height of the tower changes as you progress through the levels. It’s not enough to just make the diamond fall off the tower of bricks – it has to fall below a certain line (drawn on the screen) for the level to be completed.

There are also different kinds of bricks, with some heavier than others, and different kinds of ammo. You only get a certain amount of ammo for each level, and when it’s gone, you lose. But don’t worry! If you don’t make it on the first try, it’s very easy to restart the level and just give it another shot (or three).

All in all it’s a cute game. I’ve seen similar games with better graphics and music, but the game delivers on its main promise – a few minutes of pure time wasting!

Hello Expense is a simple, reliable expense tracker for Android

helloexpense

A good mobile application is a fine balance between simplicity and functionality. You’re using it on the go, so you don’t have a lot of time to sit there and fumble with the phone to figure it all out. But you also need it to be powerful enough to let you do whatever it is you’re trying to get done.

Hello Expense is one mobile app that gets it right. It’s an expense tracker that lets you use your Android-powered phone to quickly log the money you spend and then analyze it and see where it all went.

I recently had the chance to use it in a real-life situation – a road trip that took a few days and involved quite a few expenses. Logging each expense took seconds, and at the end of each day I could get a great overview of how much money I spent on each category so far.

Categories and tags are user-configurable; the app also sports its own number pad to make number entry easy, regardless of what keyboard you’re using.

Windows 8 Explorer to feature Ribbon UI, SkyDrive and Mesh integration?

windows 8 explorer ribbon

Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott have posted a second look at some of the early changes which have surface in Windows 8 milestone 3. First there was the restyled Welcome Screen, and now it appears that Microsoft is toying with bringing the Ribbon UI to Explorer.

The Ribbon, like in Microsoft Word and Excel, is context-aware, adding tabs for specific tasks which apply to the folder you’re viewing — such as library or picture management. You can also make out two new buttons in the status bar, which allow you to change the current folder’s view style.

It’s clear from all the placeholder images and repeated elements that this is very much a work in progress, but featuring the Ribbon more prominently in Windows 8 would certainly be a logical progression for Microsoft. It’s slowly become more ubiquitous, moving beyond Office and into Wordpad, Paint, and several of the Windows Live Essentials applications.

There’s more to the screenshots than the Ribbon UI, however. Our friend Long Zheng has noted two interesting elements in the images: Web sharing and sync (image after the break). That would likely mean users will be able to quickly upload files to SkyDrive and synchronize using Live Mesh right from Explorer in Windows 8. That’s not a total surprise considering many of the earliest leaked images of Windows 8 showed Windows Live integration on the desktop.

ITC orders import ban on Motorola Android phones over Microsoft patent issues

RAZR MAXX

Update: More of the story is coming out, and we learn that Motorola was found not to infringe on eight other patents in the case. This verdict is currently under Presidential review, and will be subject to appeal. In a statement to ArsTechnica Motorola has said the following:

Although we are disappointed by the Commission’s ruling that certain Motorola Mobility products violated one patent, we look forward to reading the full opinion to understand its reasoning. Motorola Mobility will not experience any impact in the near term, as the Commission's ruling is subject to a $0.33/per unit bond during the 60 day Presidential review period. We will explore all options including appeal.

The original story follows.

HTC's One X and EVO 4G LTE may soon have a few friends to keep them company while they wait for customs to allow them into the US, as the ITC has decided to ban the import of Motorola Android phones for infringing on a Microsoft patent for "generating meeting requests and group scheduling from a mobile device". According to FOSS Patents, this order will likely go into effect in 60 days, as the ITC has rejected Google's claims that an exclusion order was not in the public's best interests. Because of FOSS Patents owner Florian Mueller's close ties to Microsoft and his track record on proceedings of this type, we're awaiting on an official word from both sides to see just how damaging this decision may be before we make any predictions. It's very likely that Motorola can just tweak a setting and comply with the ITC's rulings while they await a full judgment.

If you recall, Motorola has been embroiled in legal disputes with Microsoft while other big players have decided to pay licensing fees to stay out of court. Sometimes this strategy will work, sometimes it backfires. In the end innovation gets stifled by patents on ideas instead of methods, and consumers always lose. More on this as it comes forth.

Hipmunk Flight Search app comes to iOS

hipmunk ios appHipmunk is a unique flight search service that rates airfares based on cost, length of trip, and “agony,” a score that combines price, duration and number of stops, and now there’s a Hipmunk Flight Search app for iPhone and iPad that lets you search and book flights on the go. The app is extremely well-designed, and it’s arguably easier and more fun to use than Hipmunk’s Web interface.

Searching flights is a snap: enter airports, tap your travel dates on a calendar, and start browsing flights. There are tabs for each of Hipmunk’s scores (duration, cost, and agony), and you can buy the flight right from Hipmunk. There’s also the convenient option to finish your transaction on your desktop by entering a code into the Hipmunk website. Hipmunk already does a great job searching flights across all the cheapest airlines and services, but adding a well-thought-out iOS app to its roster really sets it apart from the competition.

Bing begins roll out of HTML5-enhanced search interface

Bing transitions

Bing’s new HTML5-and-CSS3-enhanced search interface, which was first demonstrated back in September 2010 to showcase the power of IE9, has started to roll out.

The most notable addition to the new interface is is smooth page transitions — the fade in and out — and navigation tabs (maps, images, videos, etc.) now persistently float at the top of the page. WinRumors is also reporting that a feature reminiscent of Google Instant search is being added to Bing, with page elements smoothly transitioning in and out as you type in your search query.

If you want to try out the new Bing UI, your best bet is to set your locale to United States – English and pray that you’re part of the initial roll out. Alternatively, just wait a few days until MIX 2011, Microsoft’s Web developer conference, which is when the new Bing UI should be officially launched.

Adult Swim app brings full episodes and games to iPad and iPhone

Adult Swim is brining its lineup of shows and games to the iPad and iPhone via a new, free app. The app lets you watch full episodes of Adult Swim favorites, including Venture Brothers, Robot Chicken and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and it also serves as a dashboard for Adult Swim games.

Many of the games are paid apps — usually priced at a reasonable 99 cents — which is the same price you’d pay for them as standalone apps anyway. Adult Swim’s most popular iPhone game, Robot Unicorn Attack, is of course part of the lineup. And just so you have no excuse to bother closing the Adult Swim app, there’s also a clock, a calculator and weather info.

There are additional easter eggs to find, and more feature updates on the way, but Adult Swim’s app is already a must-have for fanboys and casual viewers alike, especially because it’s available for free.

Evoluce Win&I brings Kinect gesture controls to Windows 7

evoluce win&i windows 7 gesture control kinect
We’ve been looking at some pretty cool Kinect and Windows interactions for a while now, but we were hoping that the release of an official SDK would lead to even more coolness. Evoluce has stepped up, and is now offering Win&I — a full-featured gesture control system for Windows 7.

The company claims that a range of up to four meters is supported, which should be perfect for just about any home theater setting. In the video embedded after the break, you can see an Evoluce demonstrator flip through a photo album, pan through a map, rearrange application windows, browse the Web, and control media playback. Two versions of Win&I are offered — the home version goes for about 20 Euros, the business version for 40.

Anyone else having fun pretending his stance is a little “Iron Man”? We’re tempted to put a repulsor on that hand.

I’ve seen similar games with better graphics and music, but the game delivers on its main promise – a few minutes of pure time wasting!

webOS 3.0 beta now available to developers

hp touchpad webos 3.0

With the webOS 3.0 SDK available for almost two months, HP has now given developers access to a beta download of webOS 3.0 — which powers the upcoming TouchPad and will likely ride along on HP desktops and laptops in the form of an emulator.

Right now, the webOS 3.0 beta is only available to Early Access developers. The crew at PreCentral states that HP appears to have eased up on access restrictions, however, so hopefully more devs will get on board and those of you who are planning to buy a TouchPad in the next couple months will have plenty of slick webOS 3.0 apps to install on your new tablet.

How Secure is My Password lets you know just that

howsecureismypassword

We’ve all heard it before; you need to select a lengthy password, one that’s hard to guess. Not a dictionary word. And it has to have some capital letters in it too, and some digits, and a symbol or two won’t hurt either.

That’s a handy set of rules to keep in mind, but How Secure is My Password helps us understand why they’re important.

It’s basically like a full-screen version of one of those password-strength meters websites sometimes use. But instead of showing you a bar going from “weak” to “strong”, it shows you an estimation of how long your password would take to crack. That’s a much more visceral way to understand why your password is strong.

For example, when I entered “rabbit”, it came back with “your password is one of the 500 most common passwords. It could be cracked almost instantly”. “rabbit5″ would take two hours, “$rabbit5″ would take 38 days, and “$rabbitZ5″ would take 237 years. It’s quite enlightening to see what a difference three simple characters can make.

Twitter for iOS updated with “quick bar” and new friend finder

Twitter’s iOS apps have been updated with several new features and UI tweaks. The first thing you’ll notice in the iPhone version is the new “quick bar” at the top of your timeline. It displays a rotating list of trends, including promoted trends, and can’t be disabled. It’s a feature if you like trends, but it’s just a pesky ad banner if you don’t. The quick bar hasn’t appeared in the iPad version of the app yet.

More useful are improvements to the “new tweet” interface, especially the addition of more obvious buttons to add a photo or tag a location. Usernames you’re following now autocomplete, as well, making it easier to write replies on the go. There’s also a new friend finder that scans your iOS contact list for friends with Twitter accounts. Whether these new features outweigh the annoyance of the quick bar is a matter of personal preference.

You can download Twitter in the App Store.

YouTube Live now streaming select partners in real time

Not content with limiting its dominance in streaming uploaded videos, YouTube is now ready to take on competitors like Justin.TV and Ustream. The new YouTube Live service is being rolled out to select YouTube partners and will enable real-time broadcasting. In its official announcement, Google states that “The goal is to provide thousands of partners with the capability to live stream from their channels in the months ahead.”

You can check out live broadcasts at http://www.youtube.com/live, where you’ll also find a schedule of upcoming episodes from beta partners like Revision3 and Destructoid. You’re also able to subscribe to YouTube Live broadcasts — which will ensure you’re notified when a new episode is coming up.

Google Chrome and Chromium add protection against malicious downloads

google chrome malicious download

Google Chrome already sports a number of security-minded features, from Incognito mode to a software sandbox which makes exploiting the browser a Herculean task. Now, Google has announced additional protection for Chromium and Chrome users.

Built upon the Safe Browsing API, the new feature introduces protection against malicious downloads. If a download link appears in the Safe Browsing blacklist, Chrome and Chromium will warn users against downloading — a save button is still presented, of course, in case you’re convinced a file is perfectly safe to download.

We’d like to see something a bit more eye-catching than the red warning icon — like perhaps painting the entire bar red. Many of the people a feature like this aims to protect probably won’t notice the icon or change in wording as they’ll be focused on clicking the save button.

Google is initially making download protection available to Chrome dev channel users, and you’ll likely see it in Canary and Chromium snapshot builds as well. After thorough testing, beta and stable users will be next in line.

Mitoza is a fun, freaky Web toy with an artistic look

mitoza

While not a game per se, I found Mitoza intriguing enough to spend quite some time with it. You start off with a seed, and are then presented with two choices: you can either click a flower pot, or click a cute little birdie.

If you click the flower pot, a flower pot appears and the seed is planted inside. You’re then presented with two further choices — a water can or a bottle of fertilizer. Each choice you make causes your creation to morph, and presents you with two other choices.

There’s no winning or losing, really. Each “game” usually lasts around four or five choices, at which point the plant/animal dies in some creative (but not too gruesome) way. At this point you instantly start over with a new seed.

The graphics are captivating; the whole thing has a cinematic feel to it, with a bit of artificial camera shake added for style.

All in all, it’s a fun, peaceful way to spend a few minutes, and it might even make you think a little bit while you’re at it.

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

windows 8 aero colorization aura

While we’ve still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they’ve discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It’s a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there’s a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme’s wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

Google Cloud Print comes to HP ePrint printers

hp google cloud print

HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you’re ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you’ve got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well — like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We’re curious, though — how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.
